DISCOVERY CENTRE
The Discovery Centre first opened its doors over 5 years ago. During this time thousands of visitors of all ages have enjoyed its facilities and interactive learning materials, ranging from a library of factual literature, games, arts and crafts and incorporating hands-on experience with live invertebrates, reptiles, mammals and birds.
Conservation is the driving force behind this unit, with artefacts loaned from HM Customs, which are also utilised to educate and inspire empathy and compassion towards threatened species.
Native species are also represented by the Bat Conservation Trust, Hedgehog Preservation Society and Barn Owl Trust interpretation.
Every year the education team highlight one of the EAZA conservation campaigns. 2011 sees the start of the APE Campaign, highlighting the worlds orangutan, gorilla, chimpanzee and gibbon. These endangered species, being so close to humans, surely deserve our heartfelt consideration. Poaching, hunting and human encroachment constitute the threat of extinction to our remaining cousins.
The education team make it a priority to engage all visitors to the room with just such a cause.
After all fundraising is important, but awareness is vital!
