Throughout Autumn and Winter, keepers at Shepreth receive over-whelming numbers of the nations favourite garden frequenter – the hedgehog!
Our new ‘Hedgehog Hospital Unit’ was opened in September 2008, having spent years turning our Hospital Room into a make-shift hedgehog unit.
Daily running costs have been calculated at £15, a heavy burden on the Wildlife Park’s very limited funds. However curator, Mr Willers, feels it is extremely important for the centre to continue this work. The zoo hosts the only hedgehog rehab centre on this scale in the area, it is also where the foundations of Shepreth Wildlife Park began back in 1979, as a Wild Animal Sanctuary.
Shepreth Wildlife Park is also very grateful to the Design and Technology students at Melbourn Village College for designing, constructing and supplying them with the much needed ‘Hedgehog Houses’ essential for a successful ‘soft release’ programme each Spring.
Shepreth plans to extend the current Hedgehog Unit in 2010, to keep up with the demand.
